The first 600°C high-temperature liquid lead-bismuth alloy transport canned pump used by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences is operating normally in all test conditions, with relevant indicators meeting design requirements, including flow rate, head, cavitation, and noise. Currently, the whole-machine reliability test is underway, followed by sequential assessments such as the whole-machine sway and tilt test, impact test, and high-pressure resistance test. The pump medium is lead-bismuth, and it serves as the primary loop main pump. This 600°C high-temperature liquid lead-bismuth alloy transport canned pump was developed and designed by the School of Energy and Power Engineering of Lanzhou University of Technology and manufactured by Dalian Sifang Electric Pump Co., Ltd. The successful operation of this equipment not only fills a domestic gap but also signifies new phased progress in China's aircraft carrier nuclear power, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent construction of the entire small reactor. So, what is a high-temperature liquid lead-bismuth alloy transport canned pump? A canned pump is a seal-less pump where the pump and drive motor are enclosed in a pressure vessel filled with the pumped medium. This pressure vessel has only static seals, and a wire winding group provides a rotating magnetic field to drive the rotor. This structure eliminates the rotating shaft seal device found in traditional centrifugal pumps, thus achieving complete leak-free operation. The canned pump integrates the pump and motor, with the motor rotor and pump impeller fixed on the same shaft. A can separates the motor rotor and stator, with the rotor operating in the pumped medium, and its power transmitted through the stator magnetic field to the rotor. The manufacturing of canned pumps is not complex; their hydraulic end can be designed and manufactured according to the typical structural types and relevant standards of centrifugal pumps. The use of liquid lead-bismuth alloy transport canned pumps can meet the requirements of fourth-generation advanced nuclear energy system lead-based fast reactors, while also fulfilling the needs for miniaturization of ship nuclear power, thereby supporting China's aircraft carrier nuclear power and submarine nuclear power. Canned pumps are very compact, requiring minimal maintenance, with the primary maintenance task being bearing replacement. This convenient maintenance makes them naturally suitable for use in aircraft carriers, especially submarine nuclear power. Additionally, canned pumps are used in economic production fields, with significant applications in petrochemical and nuclear power sectors, serving as basic equipment.
