Application analysis of chemical pumps in POR projects

Propylene oxide is an important chemical intermediate widely used in the production of downstream products like polyether polyols and propylene glycol. Its production routes include the chlorohydrin process, PO/SM, PO/TBA, HPPO, etc., with HPPO being a process route that uses hydrogen peroxide to oxidize propylene into propylene oxide. Due to the generally flammable, volatile, corrosive, or strongly oxidizing nature of the relevant media, chemical pumps play a critical role in fluid transport tasks within POR projects.
In POR units, Haifa chemical pumps are primarily applied in raw material transport, reaction feed, circulating liquid transport, tower bottom liquid transport, refining reflux, wastewater treatment, and auxiliary systems. For media such as propylene, propylene oxide, methanol, solvents, hydrogen peroxide, alkali liquor, and wastewater, pump selection must not only meet requirements for flow rate, head, and net positive suction head (NPSH) but also prioritize considerations of media safety, seal reliability, and material compatibility. In particular, propylene oxide, with its low boiling point, high volatility, flammability, and strong reactivity, imposes stringent requirements on pump seals, explosion-proof motors, static grounding, and leakage control.
From the perspective of pump type selection, POR projects commonly use API610 Haifa chemical process pumps, magnetic drive pumps, canned motor pumps, metering pumps, multistage pumps, and vertical sump pumps. For critical positions involving high temperature, high pressure, or continuous operation, petrochemical process pump structures such as OH2, OH3, and OH6 can be prioritized. These pumps are widely applied in petrochemical scenarios and are suitable for conditions requiring high reliability and continuous operation. For media that are flammable, toxic, low-boiling, or where leakage is unacceptable, magnetic drive pumps or canned motor can be considered to reduce the risk of dynamic seal leakage.
In terms of materials, selection should be based on the corrosiveness of the media, using 304, 316L, duplex stainless steel, Hastelloy, or PTFE-lined structures. Different media such as hydrogen peroxide, alkali liquor, organic solvents, and chlorine-containing wastewater have significantly varying material requirements and cannot be uniformly configured. The sealing system should be selected in combination with media characteristics, choosing API682 mechanical seal schemes such as Plan 11, Plan 32, Plan 52, Plan 53, or Plan 62. For easily vaporized media, special attention should be paid to controlling seal chamber pressure, temperature, and flushing stability to avoid dry running, crystallization, vaporization, or leakage.
Overall, Haifa chemical pumps are foundational equipment for the safe, continuous, and efficient operation of POR projects. Reasonable pump type selection material configuration, sealing schemes, and explosion-proof motor configuration not only ensure long-term unit operation but also reduce leakage, downtime, and maintenance costs. For POR projects, the technical focus of chemical pumps is not simply on "delivering flow and head" but on forming a complete and reliable systematic solution tailored to operating conditions such as flammability, strong oxidation, low boiling points, and continuous operation.
