The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is accelerating the validation of technologies related to the full-tungsten first wall. The team at the Southwestern Institute of Physics under the China National Nuclear Corporation has recently made new progress in Glow Discharge Cleaning (GDC), boronization wall treatment, and the XRCS gas supply system, marking a further extension of China's capabilities in the core plasma wall treatment equipment domain for ITER, as the world's largest "artificial sun" takes shape. According to official ITER data, boronization technology uses glow discharge-assisted deposition to form a thin boron layer on the surface of plasma-facing components, which serves to adsorb impurities such as oxygen and reduce the risk of tungsten impurities entering the core plasma — making it a critical Plasma-Wall Interaction (PWI) control method under full-tungsten wall conditions.ER is currently transitioning from a beryllium first wall to a tungsten first wall design, which imposes higher requirements on the reliability of vacuum, gas handling, cooling, and auxiliary circulation systems.
