Breakthrough in grid-connected 63MW liquid air energy storage: Jiangsu Haifa focuses on new opportunities presented by -194℃ cryogenic pumps and high-pressure fluid transportation
2026-10-31 10:04:09 148 江苏海珐On October 30, 2026, the world's largest liquid air energy storage national demonstration project in Golmud, Qinghai, was successfully connected to the grid, with an overall scale of 60 MW/600 MWh, including an expansion power generation unit with a rated power of 63 and a maximum power of 66. The project adopts -194°C ultra-low-temperature cryogenic liquefaction technology, marking that Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) entered a new stage of large-scale engineering application. During off-peak electricity periods, the system uses a three-stage compressor to pressurize purified air step by step to 7 MPaA, recovers approximately 195°C hot water through interstage heat exchange, and then liquefies it through two-stage cold storage cooling, storing it in cryogenic tanks. During peak electricity consumption, liquid air is pressurized to 4.91 MPaG by cryogenic pump, then vaporized and reheated to 177.5°C and enters a four-stage expander for power generation. The entire process achieves cascading utilization of electrical energy, cold energy, and thermal energy The international market is also accelerating its layout. The UK's Highview Power is building a 50 MW/ MWh liquid air energy storage project, to enter commercial operation in 2027. A2026 study in Applied further optimized liquefaction cycles such as Linde and as well as two-phase expansion schemes, focusing on improving liquefaction rate and round-trip efficiency. International technological competition has shifted from single air liquefaction to collaborative optimization of Cryogenic Storage, Cold Energy Recovery, and Thermal Energy Integration. Jiangsuifa Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (www.jslgpump.com) can on its existing design and manufacturing foundation for API 610 OH series process pumps, BB series high-pressure multistage pumps, and VS series vertical pumps, focusing on R&D opportunities for liquid air cryogenic transfer pumps, low-temperature high-pressure liquid pumps, and low-NPSH cryogenic pumps. For -194°C operating conditions, key efforts should focus on low-temperature material toughness, shaft seal reliability, bearing lubrication, cold shrinkage compensation, cavitation control, and safety requirements brought by oxygen concentration changes. In the future, as the integration of wind, solar, and storage, long-duration energy storage, and power system construction accelerate, cryogenic liquid medium transportation will create new demand for specialized equipment. Jiangsu Haifa can carry out technical reserves around cryogenic pump hydraulic design, low-temperature sealing, and high-pressure vaporization front-end transportation, expanding the application space of industrial pumps in the new energy storage field.
