Technical analysis of the liquid oxygen pump for the New Glenn rocket

Its first stage is powered by seven BE-4 engines, which use liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquefied natural gas (LNG)/methane as propellants. According to publicly available information from Blue Origin, the BE-4 is one of the first oxygen-rich staged combustion engines to enter flight service in the United States Each engine delivers a sea-level thrust of approximately 640,000 lbf / 2,846 kN and features deep throttling capability. In this type of engine, the liquid oxygen pump is not an ordinary industrial centrifugal pump but a core component of the's turbopump system. Its task is to draw cryogenic liquid oxygen from the tank in an extremely short time and raise it to the high-pressure state required by the engine combustion chamber, where it enters the combustion system together with methane fuel. For oxygen-rich staged combustion, the oxidizer system operates under high pressure, temperature, and a strongly oxidizing oxygen environment. The reliability of liquid oxygen pump directly determines engine ignition, thrust buildup, and overall combustion stability. The first major challenge faced by the liquid oxygen pump is low-temperature adaptability. Liquid oxygen is approximately -183°C, and materials tend to become brittle at such low temperatures. Seals, bearings, rotors, and casings must all possess excellent low-temperature toughness. second challenge is cavitation control. During rocket liftoff, acceleration changes rapidly, and tank pressure and inlet conditions vary continuously. The liquid oxygen pump must maintain stable suction under limited NPSH conditions to avoid cavitation-induced flow fluctuations, impeller damage, or even engine instability. The third challenge is high speed and high power density. Rocket turbopumps typically operate at extremely high rotational speeds, requiring impellers, shaft systems, and bearings to high dynamic balance precision and vibration resistance. Additionally, liquid oxygen is highly oxidizing, and any grease, particulate contamination, or localized friction-induced heating can pose safety risks. Therefore, the manufacturing, cleaning, assembly, and testing of liquid oxygen pumps must strictly control cleanliness, and all materials and lubrication methods must meet oxygen compatibility requirements. Compared to chemical pumps, rocket liquid oxygen pumps emphasize lightweight design, high rotational speed, high reliability, and transient response capability. Compared to ordinary cryogenic pumps, they also withstand thermal shock and mechanical fatigue caused by engine startup, throttling, shutdown, and reuse. From an industrial pump perspective, the New Glenn rocket's liquid oxygen pump embodies several advanced pump technology directions: lowavitation hydraulic models, high-speed rotor dynamics, cryogenic sealing structures, oxygen-compatible materials, and extreme-condition testing capabilities. Although aerospace liquid oxygen pumps differ in application scenarios from ordinary industrial pumps, their technological accumulation provides important references for cryogenic LNG pumps, liquid hydrogen pumps, high-speed turbine pumps, and high-reliability chemical process pumps. For domestic high-end pump manufacturers, mastering low-temperature, high-speed, high-cleanliness, and high-reliability design capabilities will be a key direction for breaking into the high-end equipment market in the future.
