Technological breakthrough in high-pressure liquid hydrogen pump
2026-05-23 07:34:36 318As a core critical equipment in hydrogen energy storage, transportation, and liquid hydrogen refueling systems, high-pressure liquid hydrogen pumps widely used in aerospace, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and large-scale hydrogen storage projects. Since liquid hydrogen has a temperature as low as -253°C, and the system must also withstand high-pressure operating conditions, extremely high demands are placed on the pump's materials, seals, drive, and control systems. The research and development process must overcome multiple key technical bottlenecks.
First, research on hydrogen-compatible materials is a crucial foundation for high-pressure liquid hydrogen pumps. Ordinary metal materials are prone to "hydrogen embrittlement" in a hydrogen environment, leading to reduced material strength or even cracking. Therefore, special alloy materials that combine low-temperature toughness with resistance to hydrogen embrittlement need to be developed to ensure the long-term stable operation of the pump body, impeller, and key pressure-bearing components.
Second, precise thermal management is also a core challenge in the design of liquid hydrogen pumps. Liquid hydrogen is highly susceptible to vaporization due to heat intrusion from the environment. Once cavitation occurs, it not only reduces pump efficiency but may also lead to equipment failure. Therefore, precise control of internal heat within the pump is required through multi-layer insulation structures, low-temperature cold shield designs, and efficient cooling circulation systems.
In addition, spool valve dynamic control technology and low-temperature high-pressure sealing technology are equally critical. Under high-speed operating conditions, the spool valve must achieve precise regulation to ensure stable output of liquid hydrogen flow and pressure. At the same time, the sealing system must accommodate both ultra-low temperature and high-pressure conditions to prevent liquid hydrogen leakage. To address this challenge, advanced technologies such as metal bellows seals and low-temperature magnetic fluid seals are typically employed. In terms of the drive system, high-pressure liquid hydrogen pumps also require high-precision of motor drives, achieving high efficiency and low vibration operation through variable frequency control and high-speed motor technology, thereby providing key equipment support for the future development of the liquid hydrogen industry.
