Selection and use of API610 chemical process pumps for low-temperature processes

In petrochemical, coal chemical, fine chemical, LPG storage and transportation, low-temperature methanol washing, condensate recovery, and other units, low-temperature processes impose relatively high requirements on chemical pumps. When selecting low-temperature chemical pumps for our customers, we typically do not only consider flow rate and head but also simultaneously verify medium temperature, inlet pressure, net positive suction head (NPSH), density, viscosity, saturated vapor pressure, corrosiveness, and continuous operation requirements. This is because low-temperature media are prone to vaporization; if the pump selection is unreasonable, issues such as cavitation, vibration, mechanical seal leakage, and abnormal bearing temperature rise may occur.

For example, for small to medium flow rates and medium to high head conditions, the OH2 center-supported chemical process pump can be chosen; for high pressure and continuous operation conditions, the BB2 double-support process pump is suitable; for high-pressure low-temperature transportation conditions, BB3, BB4 or BB5 multistage centrifugal pumps can be selected. For volatile media such as liquid ammonia, liquefied hydrocarbons, low-temperature methanol, light hydrocarbons, and condensate, API682 mechanical seals and auxiliary flushing systems can also be configured according to site requirements.

Selection and use of API610 chemical process pumps for low-temperature processes

Our low-temperature chemical pumps can be customized based on project parameters. Common technical parameters are as follows: flow range 1–5000 m³/h, head range 5–1200 m, design pressure customizable per project requirements, applicable temperature range -80°C to +450°C, with special low-temperature conditions designed on a case-by-case basis. Pump configurations can cover API pump types such as OH1, OH2, OH3, BB1, BB2, BB3, BB4, and BB5. Materials for flow-wetted parts can be selected from WCB, LCB, CF8, CF8M, 304, 316, 316L, duplex stainless steel, Hastelloy, etc. Seal schemes can include API682 mechanical seal flushing plans such as Plan 11, Plan 21, Plan 32, Plan 52, and Plan 53A/B/C.

Material selection for low-temperature process pumps very important. Under low-temperature conditions, ordinary materials may experience reduced toughness; therefore, low-temperature pumps require appropriate material selection based on the minimum operating temperature and design temperature. For clean low-temperature media, LCB low-temperature steel or stainless steel can be considered; for low-temperature media that are also corrosive, corrosion-resistant materials such as 316L, duplex stainless steel, or Hastelloy should be selected based on the medium composition. When designing low-temperature pumps, we also pay attention to the pump pressure-bearing capacity, flange standards, shaft sleeve material, seal chamber structure, and the low-temperature impact performance of materials.

Mechanical seals are key components for the stable operation of low-temperature chemical pumps. Low-temperature media are prone to vaporization due to temperature changes pressure fluctuations, and ordinary single-end seals carry higher risks under certain conditions. For flammable, explosive, toxic, odorous, or volatile media, we typically recommend using double-end mechanical seals or tandem seals, configured with Plan 52 or Plan 53 seal auxiliary systems to reduce leakage risks and improve unit operational safety.

During field operation, low-temperature chemical pumps must be fullyed before startup, ensuring the pump cavity is filled with medium, and dry running is strictly prohibited. During operation, attention should paid to inlet pressure, outlet pressure, motor current, bearing temperature, vibration values, mechanical seal leakage, and seal system pressure. For low-temperature media prone to vaporization, it is also necessary to ensure that the effective NPS meets requirements, long-term operation of the pump under conditions of low flow, low inlet pressure, or deviation from the high-efficiency zone.

We believe that the reliability of low-temperature process pumps mainly depends on preliminary selection and structural design. When providing parameters, customers should, in addition to flow rate, head, and motor power, also provide as much information as possible, including medium name, operating temperature, minimum design temperature, density, viscosity, saturated vapor pressure, inlet pressure, corrosiveness, explosion-proof rating, operating time, and seal requirements. The more complete the parameters, the more accurate the low-temperature pump selection, and the more stable the subsequent operation.
