"Lieyan-2" electric cycle rocket engine: reshaping the propellant supply method of electric cycle liquid launch vehicles with electric pumps
2026-05-31 20:34:44 424 江苏海珐"Flame No. 2" (LY-2) is an electric-cycle liquid rocket engine independently developed by Spark Space. Its most notable feature is the adoption of electric pump cycle technology, using high-power motors and battery systems to drive the propellant pumps, replacing the complex gas generator and turbo-pump systems found in traditional liquid rocket engines. Public reports indicate that the "Flame No. 2" has a single-engine thrust of 10 tons and has completed full-system testing, making it one of the currently largest-thrust electric-cycle liquid rocket engines. Traditional liquid rocket engines typically rely on-temperature gas to drive turbo-pumps, pressurizing propellants such as liquid oxygen and kerosene before sending them into the combustion chamber. This approach offers high performance but involves complex systems, including gas generators, turbines, pumps, valves, ignition controls, and high-temperature seals, leading to high manufacturing difficulty, high testing costs, and demanding maintenance requirements. In contrast, electric-cycle engines directly drive the oxidizer and fuel pumps via motors, eliminating the high-temperature turbine system and significantly simplifying the engine structure. The advantages of the electric pump approach are mainly reflected in three aspects. First, it offers a simple structure and high reliability. Without the high-temperature gas turbine, the engine's thermal load and mechanical complexity are reduced, helping to lower the number of failure points. Second, thrust adjustment is more flexible. Motor speed can be quickly adjusted through the control system, thereby changing the propellant flow rate, making it suitable for commercial rockets that require rapid response and repeated launches. Third, manufacturing and maintenance costs are lower. Electric pump engines are better suited for modular design and mass production, offering clear appeal to private commercial aerospace companies. Of course, electric-cycle engines also have their limitations. The battery system adds extra weight, and the greater the thrust and the longer the operating time, the higher the demands on battery energy density, motor power density, and management capabilities. Therefore, electric pump technology is more suitable for small and medium-sized launch vehicles, upper stages, or commercial aerospace scenarios emphasizing low-cost and rapid launches, while in the field of ultra-high-thrust main engines traditional turbo-pump engines still hold performance advantages. The significance of "Flame No. 2" lies in its validation of the feasibility of domestically developed electric pump technology in larger-thrust liquid rocket engines. information shows that Spark Space is developing the "Evolution No. 1" electric-cycle liquid launch vehicle, whose propulsion system will adopt the "Flame No. 2" engine configuration, providing a new technical pathway for low-cost, high-reliability, and rapid launches in commercial aerospace. From the perspective of the pump, "Flame No. 2" reflects the development direction of high-end pump technology: high-speed motor drives, high-power-density pumps, cryogenic propellant delivery, lightweight structures, and high-reliability controls. Although rocket electric pumps differ in application scenarios from ordinary industrial pumps, their technical concepts offer important references for cryogenic pumps, high-speed pumps, liquid oxygen pumps, liquid hydrogen pumps, and high-end chemical process pumps.
