Mixed Flow Pump

Product Overview
A mixed flow pump is a type of pump that falls between a centrifugal pump and an axial flow pump, belonging to the vane pump category. Its name derives from the flow direction of the liquid within the impeller channel: when the impeller rotates, the blades generate both centrifugal force (radial) and axial thrust on the liquid. The combined effect of these two forces causes the liquid to flow out of the impeller at an angle. This unique hydraulic characteristic gives it a wide coverage of performance parameters, combining the high head of centrifugal pumps with the high flow rate of axial flow pumps.

Jiangsu Haifa Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (affiliated with Ligong Group), leveraging years of experience in pump and valve manufacturing, adopts advanced hydraulic models and precision casting processes to develop mixed flow pump products featuring high efficiency, energy savings, good cavitation resistance, and stable operation. These products are widely used in urban water supply and drainage, agricultural irrigation and drainage, water conservancy projects, industrial circulating water, and dock drainage.

3. Structural Features and Working Principle

3.1 Working Principle

The impeller shape of a mixed flow pump lies between that of a centrifugal pump impeller (radial outflow) and an axial flow pump impeller (axial outflow). When the prime mover rotates the impeller, the blades generate centrifugal force and lift on the liquid, causing it to flow out of the impeller at an angle. This design increases both the pressure and velocity of the liquid, efficiently converting mechanical energy into kinetic and pressure energy of the liquid.

3.2 Structural Features

  1. "Pull-out" Structure: Utilizes an innovative "pull-out" structural design. When inspecting or removing the impeller or shaft seal, there is no need to disconnect the piping connected to the pump body, greatly facilitating maintenance and reducing costs.

  2. High-Precision Bearings and Lubrication: Equipped with precision-machined pump shafts. Bearings use thin oil lubrication and are equipped with constant level oilers for automatic oil level control, ensuring long-term bearing operation under optimal conditions and significantly extending service life.

  3. Robust Pump Body Design: The pump body feet are designed reasonably to withstand various loads from the piping and transfer them directly to the foundation, preventing rotor bending due to pipe loads and ensuring rotor alignment.

  4. Impeller Material: To meet wear and corrosion resistance requirements, impellers are typically manufactured using precision casting. Materials can be selected from Cast Iron, Stainless Steel (304/316), Bronze, etc. Our company has full stainless steel pump production capability, representing industry-leading technology.

  5. Shaft Seal System: The shaft seal can use Packing Seal (suitable for media with high sand/sediment content) or Mechanical Seal (suitable for applications with strict leakage requirements). In submersible mixed flow pump designs, double mechanical seals are typically used, along with an oil chamber for protection, preventing medium ingress into the motor.

4. Product Advantages

  1. High Efficiency and Energy Saving: Employs excellent hydraulic models. Blades are made using precision casting or CNC machining, resulting in a smooth, glossy surface with low hydraulic loss. Efficiency is 3%-5% higher than ordinary impellers.

  2. Good Anti-clogging Performance: Mixed flow pumps have larger flow passages. Compared to centrifugal pumps, they are less prone to clogging by fibrous debris, making them suitable for conveying sewage or river/lake water containing certain impurities.

  3. Adaptability to Water Level Changes (Vertical): Vertical mixed flow pumps (HL type) can be configured with semi-adjustable or fully adjustable blades, allowing blade angle adjustment based on different water levels and operating conditions, keeping the pump running in its highest efficiency zone.

  4. Dry Motor and Submersible Motor Options:

    • Dry Motor (HLB type): The motor is located above water, offering safety, reliability, easy maintenance, and no risk of water ingress damaging the motor.

    • Submersible Type (HQB type): Integrates pump and motor, allowing submersion for underwater operation. Features low noise, good cooling effect, and high automation.

5. Application Scenarios

Leveraging its wide performance range and durable construction, Haifa mixed flow pumps are widely used in the following fields:

  • Water Conservancy Projects: River water intake, pump station construction, drainage in low-lying areas, flood control, and drought relief.

  • Municipal Water Supply and Drainage: Lift stations in sewage treatment plants, rainwater pump stations, intermediate pressurization in urban water supply systems, or raw water transmission.

  • Agricultural Irrigation: Water conveyance and drainage for large-scale farmland irrigation systems, especially in irrigation districts requiring high flow rates for water lifting.

  • Industrial Fields: Cooling water circulation in power plants (circulating water systems), process water conveyance in steel mills and chemical plants, dock drainage.

  • Aquaculture and Salt Industry: Water circulation in seawater farms, water exchange in salt fields.

6. Installation and Operating Instructions

  1. Pre-installation Check: Check if the pump shaft rotates freely and if the impeller has any sticking. Verify that the motor rotation direction matches the arrow on the pump body (clockwise when viewed from the drive end).

  2. Foundation Installation:

    • Horizontal Pump: Must be installed on a solid foundation, leveled to prevent pump body deformation due to foundation settlement.

    • Vertical/Submersible Pump: Ensure the verticality of the installation well (tube). For submersible installations, use an automatic coupling device to ensure a tight seal at the sealing face.

  3. Operation and Maintenance:

    • Must be primed with liquid before starting (for non-self-priming types), evacuating all air from the pump.

    • Do not operate for extended periods with the discharge valve fully closed (dry running), as this can cause a rapid temperature rise inside the pump, damaging the mechanical seal.

    • Regularly check bearing temperature and lubrication condition. Replace lubricating oil periodically.

    • Before restarting after prolonged shutdown, rotate the shaft to check for free movement and measure insulation resistance (for submersible pumps).
